Review Guide for final… A few drugs and how they work: Alcohol - Ethanol What it does: It is a biphasic drug - low doses have a different effect than high doses. One or two drinks can act as a stimulant; whereas high amounts will depress the CNS. Very high doses will cause vomiting, and even higher doses will cause death. Pharmacology: Low doses sensitize glutamate receptors. (Glutamate is a NTS that is generally excitatory.) These receptors are called "NMDA" receptors. At high doses, it inhibits the NMDA receptors and stimulates GABA - which is an inhibitory NTS. Nicotine (Brain Briefing on Nicotine - very good information.) Found in tobacco / cigarettes / "chew" - comes from the tobacco plant. Nicotine binds to Acetyl Choline receptors and stimulates post-synaptic membranes. It will also promote the release of dopamine. Nicotine is very slow to break down. It is considered a mild stimulant.Amphetamine (stimulants - generally increase metabolism) Often used as appetitive suppressors (diet drugs). Also called "uppers." Amphetamines are very powerful CNS stimulants that produce feelings of alertness and high energy. Increases heart rate, blood pressure, nausea and "jitteriness." Overdosing can lead to convulsions, heart failure and, of course, death. Pharmacology: Generally, amphetamines block dopamine re-uptake mechanisms, or increase dopamine release, both of which lead to increased levels of dopamine in the brain. Caffeine Caffeine is a CNS stimulant. Pure caffeine is an amphetamine, but in small doses it's best-known as just "caffeine." It's used for keeping you awake, or two "wake up" - but it will also increase heart and respiration rate, and is a diuretic (promotes the production of urine.) In high doses it will induce jitteriness and anxiety. You can die by overdosing caffeine, but it is quite difficult. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, which is an inhibitory NTS and is associated with sleeping. It will also promote the release of dopamine, and cause the release of adrenaline. Cannabis /Marijuana
