What is the Columbian Exchange? The Columbian Exchange was the system of trade between the new and old world that was named after Christopher Columbus. This trade was not only the trade of crops, but of animals, people, and disease from the New and Old world. Different Diseases transferred between the New and Old World were small pox, syphilis, missals, and mumps. Natives in Central America are quickly killed off by Spanish sailors who looked to claim land in the New World. Small pox brought from Europe is estimated to have killed possibly 90% of the Aztecs after the first contact with Europeans. Although the new world natives were much more affected by new disease brought by the Columbian Exchange, Europe gained a new disease from the New World called Syphilis which is spread into all of the Old World by sailors going back and forth. The Europeans used their ecological imperialism to kill off the major settlements in Central America to create new territories for established nations in Europe. With this new land the trade of crops come to life between the new and old world. Some New crops introduced to the Old world from the new world include Potatoes, corn, which become staple crops in new world, spices, peppers, avocados, grapes, and peanuts. These new crops had a positive impact on population growth in the Europe and Asia which lead to an over population which eventually caused a further search for land territories to be claimed in the New World. China also becomes involved in trade with the Columbian trade where it experiences an increase in population due to sweet potato growth that they traded for they also find wealth in gold in silver which comes right out of Central America in the Columbian Exchange. The crop trade was negative in the new world though due to extreme working conditions and loss of life for enslaved natives and slaves from the old world. The worst crop trade to be enslaved for was the South American sugarcane trade which was extremely laborious and caused extremely high mortality rates for slaves. This caused for an extreme increase in slave trade from mainly Africa. African slaves become highly involved to the Columbian Exchange because people are needed to work in the new plantations that are growing. Native slaves are dying off so fast that the next option is slaves form Africa and also people who are looking to work off some type of debt or start a new life. African slave were typically brought to South America to work in sugarcane fields and others would be used in the rest of the Americas. Problems from the Columbian trade such as port access caused the seven years’ war which was a fight over colonialism. British claims Canada in the new world and take India form the French. Endo European fights also break out in the new world where devastated native empires
