Functionalist see a stable society being based on shared norms and values andsocial solidarity through socialization and social control. So, crime could disruptthis but functionalist would still see it as functional for society. They believe itprovides a clear boundary between what is right and wrong as Durkheim calls it“boundary maintenance”. Functionalist see crime as inevitable and universal dueto inadequate socialization and the increased number of subcultures and groupsin modern society which make them prone to deviate.Durkheim identifies two positive functions in crime the first being boundarymaintenance when crime produces a reaction from society, which ultimatelyunites its members against the offender. This as a whole reinforces theircommitment to the valued consensus. This is also the function of punishmentwhich is to reaffirm shared values and reinforce solidarity. E.g. courtroom publiclystigmatize offenders, reminding everyone what is right and wrong so lines are notblurred.Another function would be adaptation and change explaining all changestarts with deviance. For this change to occur individuals will have to challengeexisting norms which will first appear as deviant but then lead progressive tochange. If it is suppressed society will not change and remain stagnate as a whole.
