The Extension of the Cold War to the Far East 1945-1960 1. The first Indochina War 1946-1954 a. Ho Chi Minh requested President Wilson’s Principle of National Self-Determination to be applied to Vietnam. He never received a reply. b. Ho Converts to Marxism: Ho went to USSR to study the techniques of communist revolution. He returned to Vietnam during WWII and organized an anti-Japanese guerrilla movement called the Vietminh c. Vietnam Liberated – Summer 1945 – Japanese forces evacuate the country. Nationalist Chinese forces received the Jap surrender in the North, Brit forces received the Jap surrender in the South d. Ho Declares Vietnam Independent – Sept.2, 1945 – Vietminh takes control over Hanoi after Jap surrender and proclaimed the Republic of Vietnam. But Brit forces in the South allow French colonial forces to return e. Attempts at a compromise failed b/t Ho and France in 1946 f. Full scale war 1946 g.
