The Cuban Missile Crisis 1. The Break between Havana and Washington a. US are major investors in Cuba, Castro wants to seize large portion Eisenhower (and eventually JFK) employ embargo on Cuba, covert action to overthrow government/Castro, sanction on Cuban sugar 2. The Abortive Attempt to Overthrow Castro a. April 1961 – stimulate an official overthrown of Castro b. Exiles, under US training, came under attack in Bay of Pigs, Kennedy called off air support because he didn’t want to acknowledge involvement in conflict the US Bay of Pigs invasion was an utter failure c. Operation Mongoose – the assignation of Castro LSD? Exploding cigar? Poison seashell? Fully aware of JFK’s threat, Castro goes to the Soviet for help. He develops a close (economic) relationship with Khrushchev during the UN meeting in ‘61 d. The Soviet Missile Gap 1962- The SU was the firist of the two superpowers to test an inter-continental ballistic missile in 1957.
