Epidemiology is data-driven and relies on asystematic and unbiased approach to the collection, analysis, andinterpretation of data.In fact, epidemiology is often described as the basic science of publichealth, and for good reason. First, epidemiology is a quantitativediscipline that relies on a working knowledge of probability, statistics,and sound research methods. Second, epidemiology is a method ofcausal reasoning based on developing and testing hypothesesgrounded in such scientific fields as biology, behavioral sciences,physics, and ergonomics to explain health-related behaviors, states,and events. However, epidemiology is not just a research activity butan integral component of public health, providing the foundation fordirecting practical and appropriate public health action based on thisscience and causal reasoning.Level of diseaseThe amount of a particular disease that is usually present in acommunity is referred to as the baseline orendemiclevel of thedisease.
