Rodenbeek Caitlin Rodenbeek Randall ENG 122-054 2 November 2006 How Society Defines Commitment Rollo May once said, “The relationship between commitment and doubt is by no means an antagonistic one. Commitment is healthiest when it is not without doubt but in spite of doubt.” The word commitment can often times be interpreted as the most controversial concepts in today’s society. It is best thought of when a person can take any doubt he or she might have and use it as fuel to better one’s self. It is involved in such activities as playing a sport or acting, but people seem to only view it when abused rather than when it is most important. It is impossible to truly decipher one particular meaning to this word, because it has become so open to interpretation. Therefore, for the purpose of this essay the definition of commitment is defined as a sense of duty and loyalty to one’s spouse, career or schooling, and country.
