6/25/15 Origins of the American Revolution HIST 127 - Declaration of Independence (1776) “When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another…” - Colonists rebelled in the name of freedom; actually may be because of money John Adams = Revolution over molasses - French and Indian War (1754-1763) - British & colonists fought side by side - After war, British realized that they allowed the colonies to grow without many restrictions; felt need to reform them under central direction. - British gov’t also needed money to pay for the war = tax Wealthy landowners in Britain were heavily taxed during the 1700s, soldiers who came back suggested the colonists be taxed - The Basic Events Royal Proclamation Line (1763) - West of line (Appalachians) = Indian reservation; stick to east of line - Brits thought it secured the eastern seaboard & reduce tension w/ Indians; Makes colonies smaller and easier to control; landowners cannot expand tax free - Colonists saw the west as their reward for winning the war -
