Film Appreciation In the movie Vertigo, John Ferguson (portrayed by James Stewart) is hired by Gavin  Elster (portrayed by Tom Helmore) to investigate why his wife Madeleine Elster (portrayed by  Kim Novak) is behaving in a strange manner.  Ferguson falls in love with Madeleine and is  devastated when he cannot stop her from committing suicide by jumping out of a high tower due  to his acrophobia.  After Madeleine's death, Ferguson becomes obsessed with the young woman  Judy Barton because she looks very similar to Madeleine, but when he discovers that Judy  pretended to be Madeleine in Gavin's plot to kill his wife he takes Judy back to the tower, where  she ends up committing suicide. The main theme of Vertigo is obsession.  The movie begins with Madeleine's obsession  with her ancestor Carlotta Valdes, which seems to be causing her strange behavior.  While
