RESEARCH PAPER2Research Paper- Organizational BehaviorChapter 10- Whether it is Possible for an Outsider to Accurately Discern about theUnderlying Cultural Values of an Organization by Analyzing Symbols, Ceremonies, Dress,or Other Observable Aspects of Culture in Comparison to an Insider with Several Years ofWork Experience.Culture is defined as a set of values guiding beliefs, norms, and understandings that areshared by members of a given company or organization (Daft, 2016). It is also vital to note thatculture can be shared with new members to influence their feeling, behavior, and thinking.According to Daft (2016), culture is the norm that is unwritten and generally goes unnoticed. Anindividual can only understand that there exists culture whenever they go against the basicrequirements put in place.Institutional culture survives on two stages; the observable and the underlying values(Daft, 2016). The observable behaviors and visible artifacts are found on the surface and includehow people dress, power structures, type of control systems, stories, shared ceremonies, andsymbols. Even though the visible culture can be discerned by an outsider, it is critical to note thatit represents profounder principles in the minds of the associates. The said fundamental principles, standards, conventions, thought processes, and beliefsfunction involuntarily to describe the philosophy of an organization (Daft, 2016). A building isan example of a visible culture, while collaboration, teamwork, openness, and innovation areunderlying principles that cannot be seen by an outsider. Therefore, using a measurement scale of1% to 100% (where 1 represents low accuracy and 100 highly accurate), an outsider can onlydiscern the underlying culture by 40% because only the visible aspects of culture can beestablished but not the feelings and shared values that define the mode of internal working.
