There are several steps that must be completed for any violentcrime with living victims. If not done correctly, this can make the difference in whether the casewill be solved and whether the victim will see justice for their assault.First the officer mustinform the proper authorities, and the suspect must be taken into custody for questioning. Thevictim of the crime should be consoled and receive medical attention. The crime scene should besecured, and safety must be taken to ensure that there are no other assailants in the area. Finally,all evidence must be documented to build the case. The importance of each step and theconsequences of not completing each task will be discussed below.For the following discussion, the crime scene involves a juvenile rape victim and afleeing suspect. The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical attention, and the susepctattempted to run to a car with a running computer and drugs in plain view through the window.The suspect was caught, but the evidence indicates that the accused rape is ont the only crimethey may have committed. Evidence must be documented for the accused crime as well as anyother illegal activities that are uncovered in the process.
