Interpretation of a Text Having begun to develop a close, critical reading of the text, you may (should?) then want to begin forming an interpretation of the text. Often, interpretation involves a systematic understanding of the text in terms derived from some other discipline or body of knowledge. An “historical interpretation,” for instance, involves an understanding of the text based on a knowledge of the social, economic, cultural or political history of the period in which the text originated. A psychological interpretation involves an interpretation of a character or a passage in the light of personality theory, learning theory, or some other terms from the discipline of psychology. A “Marxist interpretation” analyzes a text in terms of the economic theories of production and control associated with left-wing social theory, and a “Christian interpretation”
