Lanahan Reading Summaries 1. Alexis de Tocqueville, from Democracy in America Tocqueville describes that only America have we been able to witness the natural growth of society and he analyzes American as a social phenomena. Toqueville characterizes the distinguishing feature of American society as a lack of rank and aristocracy and a deeply held belief in the equality of opportunity 2. James Bryce, from The American Commonwealth Bryce describes the different conceptions of equality such as monetary, knowledge, position, and status. Bryce says Americans have inequality of the first three but equality of the last since Americans view each other as equal as human beings. 3. Louis Hartz, from The Liberal Tradition in America This is a complicated philosophical analysis about the contradictions of American political character. The ultimate paradox is the fact that America is conservative about liberalism, in that the country started from a revolution. This is different because we never transitioned from feudalism, so it is hard for other countries to relate to our political culture. 4. Theda Skocpol, from Diminished Democracy She describes the change in the nature of Americans' associations from civic volunteer organizations to professionally managed lobbyist groups due to changed institutional features of the nation such as media/technological advances. She talks about how 9/11 could have changed this but institutions have lagged behind the people. 5. Cornel West, from Race Matters This is a reflection on the racial divisions that still plague America today. He talks about how black people are still viewed as problem people. He broadens the discussion to talk about the spiritual impoverishment afflicting Americans is a reflection of rampant individual without focus on the public well-being. He suggests access to basic social goods and a new generation of leadership. 42. Eugene Rostow, from The Dem. Character of Judicial Review This is a lengthy defense of the democractic quality of Judicial Review. Rostow uses Hamilton’s view of the courts to justify that the Courts should protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority. In other words, some parts of American society should be protected from the reach of any majority, save constitutional amendment. 51. Charles Ogletree, from All Deliberate Speed Ogletree uses Brown v. Board of Education’s phrase “All deliberate speed” as a way of analyzing the progression of civil rights protection over the past 50 years. He argues that the slow change instituted by Brown’s implementation has held true through the 1978 Bakke ruling as well as the more recent Grutter and Gratz rulings on Affirmative Action (striking down quotas but upholding the value of diversity). He argues that there has been a forced abandonment of a legal and intellectual justification of integration, which is today reflected in an educational “resegregrating.” Therefore he says the standard set by Brown I and II has created progress but also halted it.
