SOC 140 EXAM 2 Review SOC 140 – EXAM 2 Ch. 5 - Gender, Work, and the Economy What was the nature of families prior to industrialization? o Families were places of work o Separate Spheres: Idea that men and women carry out labor roles yet they are in separate arenas o After the mechanization of production there was decline in reliance on home production o Many family members exchanged labor to make wages What are the three historical periods of families and work discussed in class? o Family-Based Economy Characterized much of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries Households are basic unit of economic production Small forms, artisan’s shops, large plantations, required work of all household members for survival o Family-Wage Economy Decline in available farm land meant many families were no longer able to be completely self-sufficient Men increasingly left the home to work for wages The production of household goods by women o Family-Consumer Economy By the turn of the century, most men and many women, entered paid employment Today, majority of men and women combine paid employment and unpaid domestic work. The two-earner family By the beginning of the 20 th century, why were families no longer able to be completely self-sufficient? What is now the predominate family structure for families with children? o Model form is now the two-earner family among married couples According to Hochschild’s (2003) “The Second Shift,” how much housework do women do compared to men? o Women invest: 4 times the effort in meal preparation and cleanup 1
