MNGT 4100 March 2013 Take Home 1. I’ve selected Germany for my cultural analysis and I will discuss its culture in the following terms: Individualism / collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, time orientation and masculinity vs. femininity. Power distance Whether a society is a low- or high power distance is determined based on to which extent members and organizations with less power within a country accept that power is distributed unequally. Germany is a lower power distance society, which means that it is highly decentralized and supported by a strong middle class. I.e. people with a higher social rank will still treat people with a lower social rank with respect. Individualism / Collectivism Whether a society belongs to individualism or collectivism is defined by how independent people are, do they care for themselves only or for a whole group? I.e. do people think I terms of “I” or “we”. Germany belongs to individualism, which means that people look after themselves and loyalty is a mix of personal preferences, duty and responsibility. Germans are known for being very direct and believe in “be honest, even if it hurts”. Masculinity vs. femininity If a society is driven by competition, achievement and success, then it’s a masculine society. If a society is driven by caring for others and quality of life, then it’s a feminine society. Germany is a masculine society. This means that performance (success) is very important and people live in order to work. Uncertainty avoidance How uncertainty avoidant a society is depends on to which degree members of that society feel uncomfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity. Germany is considered to be among the uncertainty avoidant countries. This means that they want to protect themselves against all kind of unfavorable events that may occur in the future. Time orientation A society can be long- or short-term oriented depending on if they are future oriented or history oriented. Germany is a short-term oriented society. This means that they value traditions and are very normative. 2. a) In Germany equity is more important. Because the country is an individualistic society, which means that equity is used to distribute compensation.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
