Matt Murphy Geology 112 Section 2 Dean Due: 2/28/05 Colombia: Geological Resources Colombia, located in the northwest corner of South America, is well known for its abundance in many resources. Although its most famous natural resource, opium, is internationally illegal, Colombia is very prominent in important resources too. Most of these resources are geologically important and include coal reserves, petroleum and oil reserves, and even emeralds. Others include minerals and precious and abundant metals. Mining in Colombia began around the 1500’s, where it played a somewhat strong role in their colonial development. But back then, it never commanded a huge sum of Colombia’s gross domestic product. Recently, though, the role of mining has become increasingly important to Colombia’s economy. For the most part, coal mining is Colombia’s most important resource and is divided into two sections, large-scale and medium to small scale mining.
