Matt Murphy English 202 Section 4 Professor Mason King Due: 12/12/05 Proof David Auburn’s Pulitzer prize-winning play “Proof” gives great insight into the awkwardness for those inexperienced in relationships. Through the main character, Catherine, the story explores how relationships have the ability to influence and change life. It is made clear to the reader that Catherine has very little experience with relationships and interacting with others. It is through the experiences that she encounters in this story that make her realize how important relationships truly are. Her solidarity is first made evident when she is conversing with her father in Act I. Her father is curious as to why her friends are not taking her out for the night to celebrate her birthday. She simply replies that “in order for your friends to take you out you generally have to have friends.” Her father has a dismissive response to this and doesn’t try to press the issue.
