1CHAPTER IIntroductionBackground of the StudyTo say that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the world would bean understatement. In just a few months, it upended day-to-day lives across the globe. Varioushealth protocols and guidelines were immediately implemented restricting the way we normallylive. It has left national economies and businesses counting the costs, as governments struggle withnew lockdown measures to tackle the spread of the virus. Health systems are put under immensepressure and stretched others beyond their capacity. However, this did not hinder us in finding away to stay connected with the people around us and have the company everyone seeks. Throughvarious online platforms we were able to video call our friends and families. Furthermore, this hasopened the path for classes to be resumed which are now being held online since schools werepreviously closed during the onset of the pandemic.Globally, many countries have adopted this approach. Schools in New York, the UnitedStates, prepared for online learning by distributing gadgets to their students, ensuring they hadaccess to learning materials. However, the Philippine education system is struggling to adapt tothe sudden and major shift to distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Department ofEducation (DepEd) delayed the opening of the school year and offered Self-Learning Modules tostudents at home. Currently, students are being taught through radios, televisions, modules, andvarious online tools. Most public-school students come from less privileged families, and theirmental health has become a major concern during this period of transition. Families who have
2more disposable income find themselves in a more fortunate situation, but online learning stillproves to be difficult.
