Effective advertising in the media has always consisted of some advertisements exposing the female body to promote one’s product to appeal to a wide audience. In advertising, the female body is often sold to an audience of young adults in an effort to persuade young female and males that there is a certain way that their bodies are supposed to look. This look is determined by the mass media and has a major impact on the amount of young girls who suffer from anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, due to their low self esteem that magazines have influenced. This type of advertising is available for all ages to view, and are causing the female gender to diet and slim down at younger ages then ever before. The mass media has an immense impact on the overall impression of how woman should look in society. Jean Kirkpatrick elaborates on this issue when she discusses about “…the image of the women in popular culture has been a middle class image… in which women trade virginity and individuality for the security marriage and pretend to supply.” (Kirkpatrick, 81). Jean explains how the overall image of women portrayed in the media is degrading to the overall image of housewives in mainstream America. Woman’s magazines are prime examples of the media setting high standards for how woman should appeal to men. Women’s magazines are full of articles urging woman to lose more weight so that they could be overwhelmed with great benefits such as a rich husband, great children, rewarding jobs, and an ideal life. This trend of magazines has influenced women to have tremendous pressure to conform to society’s standards. This makes one wonder why there is difficult standards to meet for women living in society.
