2In this case study, four managers are discussing performance appraisals for their company. Within this discussion, the youngest manager, Tom, brought up his concerns with the appraisals and the difficulty he has with where to rate people on a numerical scale. The managers discuss their points on what they take into account when they rate their subordinates, and how they use the ratings to sometimes motivate, or maybe even to just appease them. One manager, Max gave an example of using the rating system to balance out differences in the company’s policy for merit raises. Jim talks about a situation where he based his rating for a worker on the improved performance during the last few months. Max brought up that some managers have used inflated ratings in order to move certain “problem” employees to other departments. Lynne discussed her reason for hesitating to deflate someone’s evaluation. She stated that deflating someone’s rating can backfire and Max said it does happen. Max said it
