Samantha Bialek ASP 220 Take-Home Quiz 1. Manifest Destiny was the idea that America was going to expand towards the west all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Some saw this as religious, as though it was all in “God’s plan” for America to accept this westward fate. Democrats were the first to coin this phase, but Republicans, such as Abraham Lincoln, wanted to ignore this idea of expanding horizontally and focus on improving life vertically along the Atlantic Ocean. Lincoln did, however, give in and pass a law that allowed western expansion. 2. The most important American export during the expansion of slavery was cotton. 3. Eli Whitney created the cotton gin in an effort to increase production of cotton by eliminating having to separate the seeds from the cotton by hand. 4. The north mostly supported having no slaves, the upper south had some slaves but fewer plantations, and the Deep South had the most slaves along with the most plantations. 5. William Lloyd Garrison was a famous abolitionist who published the radical abolitionist newspaper entitled The Liberator. 6. David Walker was a black abolitionist who was made famous by his article entitled “Walker’s Appeal” which encouraged blacks to rebel and embraced black pride. 7. In 1830 the Underground Railroad was established which helped lead black slaves to freedom. In 1831, a Baptist slave named Nat Turner lead a revolt in Virginia that killed a lot of whites. William Lloyd Garrison began publishing his newspaper. In 1830 the Convention of the People of Color is held to oppose slavery and try to eliminate discrimination in the already free states. National Negro Conventions were also help during this time. 8.
