Unformatted text preview: Emily Bissel MS #1116 Lab Partners: Becca Angell and Megan Anders February 26, 2008 Tuesday PM Lab 5: Spectrophotometric Determination of an Equilibrium Constant Introduction When the rates of the forward and reverse of a reaction equal one another, the reaction is said to be at chemical equilibrium. The point at which this occurs can be represented by the equilibrium constant, K eq . By examining the equilibrium constant, a person can determine whether the reaction favors the products or the reactants. If the K eq is a larger number, the reaction tends to move to the right, and favors the products; if K eq is a small number, the reaction tends to move to the left, and therefore favors the reactants. K eq varies with temperature, but remains a constant at a constant temperature. Because of this, K eq can be determined through experimentation because it should be the same no matter what the initial concentrations of the reactants and products are.
