Homework #6, GEOLOGY 1020, Spring 2008 This homework covers the Carbon Cycle (especially helpful will be images 6 and 16 in that lecture image file) and Carbon Isotopes (especially helpful will be images 6-15 in that lecture image file). This is open book, open notes, and open consultation with whom ever you choose. As with the prior homework, I strongly suggest you print a copy and work on the homework off line --- researching the answers in the online lecture images, your notes, and the book. Then go back in and fill in your best answers (surely the right ones) online. Doing so makes this a homework that reinforces your learning (hopefully a positive feedback). Questions 7-10 quantitatively follow one possible path (weathering of sedimentary carbon) through the carbon cycle and its potential implications to global climate. My intention is that if you figure out one path, you improve your understanding of the concepts. On an exam I could test that understanding by asking the same type of questions relative to a different path (e.g., burial of sedimentary carbon, volcanic releases). And questions 14-16 all relate to one carbon isotope plot. Again the questions should help you understand the basic concepts. On an exam I could ask similar questions relative to a one or more of the other patterns on that plot. Something to think about. 1. What is the difference between a reservoir and a flux? (try pages 223-224 of the text) A. A reservoir is any physical entity that contains and stores something; a flux is the rate at which that something moves from one reservoir to another B. A reservoir is a depression in the Earth that holds something; a flux is the process by which something moves in and out of that reservoir C. A reservoir is a rock that contains elements (like carbon); a flux is movement of that element through all interconnected reservoirs.
