The Chinese believed that they were the center of the universe and the greatest culture; therefore inferior cultures such as the English should have to come to them and would benefit from the interaction. Basically the Chinese believed that they were better than the English. 2. The English believed that China and themselves were equals who could both mutually benefit from trade.
