Apprenticed to Basire, an engraver, till the age of 21- 7 years long 1778 - Attended Royal Academy in Somerset House, Joshua Reynolds, school’s first president, believed in generalizing and categorizing the human mind “general truth” and general beauty”. Blake believed "To Generalize is to be an Idiot; To Particularize is the Alone Distinction of Merit" 1780 – Blake believed to have spontaneously joined mob in Newgate Prison riot. Riot response to bill that revoked sanctions against Roman Catholic Church. Led to creation of first police force. 1782 Blake meets John Flaxman, became his patron, and Catherine Boucher, became his wife. August 18, 1782 1783 – first sketches 1784 – opened own print shop with brother Robert 1788 – Blake begins relief etching or illuminated printing 1800 – William Hayley, illustrated his works at Felpham in Sussex, found to business like,
