Chapter 1: The Evolution of Psychology Psychology (psyche + logos) is about understanding all of the things we do. “The study of the mind”. Psychology is practical. Psychology comes from a fusion of philosophy and physiology. Truisms occur frequently in media. Wilhelm Wundt is often considered the father of psychology. Structuralism vs Functionalism Structuralism – “The task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how they are related” Functionalism – “Psychology should investigate the function or purpose of consciousness rather than its structure” Psychoanalysis – Coined by Freud, the unconscious contains thoughts, memories, and desires
