Mechanical Properties
Ductility – The ability of a material to be drawn or plastically deformed without breaking is known as ductility.
Malleability – The quality or state of being malleable such as a capability of being shaped or extended by hammering,
forging, etc.
Elasticity – This is the ability to return a solid to its original shape or form after being stretched or compressed by force. For
example, the suspension on a bike.
Tensile strength – The resistance of a material to breaking under tension an example would be how much force can be put
on a material before it tears apart.
Comprehensive strength – The resistance of a material to breaking under compression for example, when a column
supports a load
Shear strength - The shear strength of a material is defined as its ability to resist forces that cause the material's internal
structure to slide against itself for example, a cantilever beam built into a wall may shear at the point of support.
