Barb Catlin MHL 155 4-11-2008 A Brief Look at the Life of Johnny Cash and his Hit Single, “I Walk The Line.” Johnny Cash was a man of many different colors. Although his signature all black outfits would have you believe something different. Michael Streissguth once wrote, “In life, the long- legged, guitar picking man wore many faces: on the one hand, he was a heartfelt balladeer, devout Christian, patriot, baritone voice for the downtrodden and a warm supporter of family, fellow musicians, friends and strangers in need; on the other he was a lifelong pill addict, philanderer, establishment sell-out, ornery cuss and godfather of all that is dark in country music and rock’n’roll.” Cash had a number of influential moments in his life that helped to make him so successful musically, however, there were just three life altering periods of his life that inspired Cash to become the “Man in Black.” Cash’s brother’s tragic death, the events through a broken marriage with Vivian Liberto, and his later love for June Carter, helped to make Cash one of the most influential American musicians of the Twentieth Century. Cash was born one of seven children as J.R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas in 1932 to Ray and Carrie Cash. He was raised on a farm outside Kingsland in a town called Dyess, Arkansas. His family’s economic and personal stuggles on the farm during the depression required him at only the age of five, and his brother Jack to work long hours to help the family farm survive. This shaped Cash as person and inspired many of his later songs, mostly those about others
