The movie I chose to analyze was Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” which was originally part two of the movie “Grind-House” but was split apart when released on DVD. Tarantino has been known for mixing up movies making them a little reverse from the norm. He also has been known to sometimes reverse common gender codes like in the movie “Kill Bill”. “Death Proof” is no different and takes the usual gender codes which show up at the beginning of the movie and then half way through just flips them around. I feel that the way he does this is trying to show that the gender codes that we have grown up with and are accustomed to may be changing quicker than we had first thought, “Death Proof” shows a shift in power half way through and shocks you while keeping you intrigued. The movie takes place in modern day America. The first half of the movie takes place in present day Austin Texas. This is a fairly diverse area as you can tell by the main characters. In this portion of the movie you are introduced to all three of the ladies and the one “bad guy”. You have Jungle Julia who is a DJ for a local Austin radio station who is looking to break out of her basic role but is struggling to get her record label set up. Then you have her two friends that she likes to go out with first being Shanna a southern girl who likes to have fun and Arlene also known Butterfly a Puerto Rican beauty who doesn’t back down from a challenge and gives off a tough attitude but still has the women like gentle side. They spend a crazy night bar hopping before they head up to their lake house for the weekend. As the night winds down you meet the mysterious stunt man Mike. At first he seems like your every day gentleman but the girls find out that maybe this southern white gentleman isn’t who he seems to be. As they leave the bar is where the plot really takes a twist. You think that everyone is going to go

their separate ways but this is when you discover that stunt man Mike is actually a cold blooded killer who uses his “death proof” car to eliminate his victims. All characters are between middle and lower classes, middle class for then victims and a lower class for the “bad guy”. In this half of the movie they uphold a lot of modern day gender codes maybe gender codes from a couple years back. They have the bad guy more in control then the woman. All of the women victims are drunk around the time they meet Mike while he is completely sober. This also gives him the advantage,
