UN: Hunger Affects Record 805 Million People UN hunger definition: defined as getting less than 1,800 calories daily Jumped by 100 million people over the last year because of the "devastating combination" of wars, high food prices, drought, and the global financial crisis. "A hungry world is a dangerous world," said the head of the UN's World Food Program. "Without food, people have only three options: They riot, they emigrate or they die. None of these are acceptable options."

Nutritional Deficiency: Nutrients & Energy Marasmus is the result of a diet that is deficient in energy (calories). Child is skinny with stunted growth. Kwashiorkor: Adequate calories, but not enough protein, e.g. with a single staple carbohydrate like maize or rice). Children have body fat, an enlarged liver, & edema- swelling from excess water in the tissues. They also have growth retardation.
