HISTORY of UPS, DHL and FedEx 2 History of UPS, DHL and FedEx United Parcel Service (UPS), DHL Worldwide Express and FedEx are considered to be the largest shipping and logistics companies in the globe. They handle the delivery of millions of packages all over the world. UPS UPS owes its origins to Jim Casey who founded it in 1907 in Seattle. He was only 19 years old at the time and operated a bicycle messenger service known as American Messenger Service, with only six bicycles. Its operations included delivery of hot lunches as well as telegraph messages (Steward, 2013). Casey merged the company with another company known as Motorcycle Delivery Company to form Merchants Parcel Delivery. The company had already expanded by 1915 with four cars and five motorcycles. It mainly specialized in the delivery of services for department stores. The first major move was in 1919 when the company opened another branch in Oakland and changed its name again to United Parcel Service. The 1920s saw
