Someday a truck drives up. Two men jump up and grab a little girl, and they drag her out into a nearby field. Then they tie her up. Then they rip her clothes from her body and they climb on her the first one then the other, raping her, shattering everything that is innocent and pure vicious thrusts, and there’s a fog of drunken breath and sweat. When they’re done, after they’ve killed her tiny womb, murdered any chance for her to bear children or have life beyond her own, they decided to use her for target practice. They started throwing full beer cans at her. Threw ‘em so hard they ripped the flesh all the way to the bear bones. Then they urinated on her. Now comes the hanging. They got the rope and tied a noose. Imagine the noose tight around her neck. Then there’s a sudden blinding jerk as she’s pulled into the air and her legs go kicking. They don’t find the ground. The hanging branch isn’t strong enough. It snaps and falls back down to the earth. So they pick her up, throw her into the truck, drive down to Foggy Creek Bridge, and pitched her over the edge. She got some 30 feet down to the creek bottom below. Can you see her, the rape, beaten, broken body, soaked in their urine, soaked in their semen, and soaked in her blood, left to die? Can you see her? Now imagine she’s white.” (A Time to Kill) Because the little girl in the movie was black, the [all-white] jury was going to say that what the two white men did to the little black girl was O.K. However when they applied the same standards of a white person to a black girl, they decided that it was illegal. They first discriminated against someone because had pre-concluded that all blacks are less equal to whites and even sub-human. Discrimination is defined as the treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit. For example, Jessie Jackson is recognized as a highly respected man, but to someone with a racial discriminatory preference against blacks would consider him scum compared to a white bum on welfare. That person does not consider Jessie Jackson’s individual merit, but only considers his racial category. So if racism is so bad, who are the victims? In some way everybody’s a victim. Even whites are discriminated against but that is the result of whites first

discriminating against other races who are mainly African-American. In the past it was not only whites as individuals that were racist toward blacks, but the laws of the land we’re also racist toward blacks. Not until after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated did the government put in place the Civil Rights laws, which are laws against discrimination, therefore making all minorities equal by law. However, racism still rages in the hearts of many Americans today.
