Philosophy Exam 2: Peter Singer “Famine, Affluence and Morality” (p1) Suffering and death are bad (p2) If it’s in your power to prevent something (very) bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of (Comparable) moral importance, it would be morally wrong for you not to do it. (p3) It’s in your power to prevent some suffering and death by sending money to a famine relief-fund. (p4) Doing p3 will not cause you to sacrifice anything comparable to suffering and death. Were not going to have sweatshops 2. Should pay living wages (but don’t want to legally enforce) 3. Subjective and hard to empathize 4. (Uneducated?) Coercive aspects Arguments against outsourced manufacturing: 1. Unconscionable wages 2. Developing countries under standard wage to attract business 3. Widen economical gap 4. Collusive with repressive regimes
