Checking the Conditions Note: When checking each of the conditions, regardless of the procedure, you must do all three of the following:: 1. State the complete condition. 2. Say whether or not the condition is met (either completely or not at all met—no middle ground) 3. Say why it is or is not met Note: RAT represents Random Allocation of individuals to Treatments Procedure: One sample z Confidence Interval for mean, one sample z Test on mean Condition (1): Randomness Must have an SRS (for observational study or sample survey) Condition (2): Normality of the sampling distribution of x Must have at least one of the following for this condition to be met: Population given as Normal Sample data (from plot) appears Normal (i.e., no outliers or strong skewness.) Sample size is at least 30 so the Central Limit Theorem applies. Condition (3): The value of σ must be known. Procedure: One sample t Confidence Interval for mean, one sample t Test on mean Condition (1): Randomness Must have an SRS (for observational study or sample survey) Condition (2): Normality of the population Must have at least one of the following for this condition to be met: Population given as Normal Sample data (from plot) appears fairly Normal (i.e., no outliers or strong skewness resulting in t procedure being robust with respect to Normality.) Sample size is at least 40 so Central Limit Theorem applies (i.e., use of t procedure is ok even with outliers or strong skewness.) Procedure: Matched pairs t Confidence Interval for mean difference, matched pairs t Test on mean difference Condition (1): Randomness Must have exactly one of the following for this condition to be met: SRS (for observational study or sample survey) RAT (for experiment) Condition (2): Normality of the population of differences
