General Issues 1. Socrates’ most fundamental question about philosophy: What is the higher purpose of human beings, and how can it be achieved? Related political philosophy question: What is the role of government in achieving this higher purpose (what should it be?) 2. A person’s view of human nature affects a person’s philosophy and their view on the proper role of government. 3. The social/political/economic crises that occurred during a philosopher’s time influences their philosophical views 4. Who is best suited to rule—the elite, religious leaders, the masses…? 5. Correct order of US Presidents: FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, George W. Bush Women: 1920 (19 th Amendment) African-Americans: 1870 and 1964 1. Democracy is an ideal, not an ideology because people have very different understandings about what democracy is and how to go about achieving the ideal of democracy. Democracy is a contested concept. 2. Many political philosophers disliked democracy because they believed that it was a dangerously unstable form of government. Philosophers also disliked democracy because they believed that it put political power into the hands of ignorant and envious people. Aristotle believed that democracy was unstable because the demos tended to be shortsighted and selfish. 3. Representative democracy is not direct rule by the people, but rule through elected representatives. California is governed as a republic—with three branches of government
