February 29, 2008 SHINTOISM - more of a worldview than a religion  -- little separation between culture  and religion – more of an individual identity/cultural identity - secularization - “Shinto” – coined in the 6 th   century - Buddhism came into Japan in the 6 th  century AD - “Shen-Tao” = the way of the gods - “Kami” – Shinto term for gods, and the entire spiritual dimension; emperor  is connected with this belief  - Ancient text: “Kojiki” (ancient records) o Describe the beginnings of the Japanese islands; drops of water  from his spear formed the islands - Izanagi = male god - Izanami = female god o Together they produced the sun goddess, Amaterasu (most  important) o Temples found all over Japan - Very isolated belief system – unique to Japan; linked to geography and  culture of the Japanese  - Kami-no-michi – how the Japanese refer to their faith
