REL 526 March 11, 2008 Zoroastrianism (youtube videos – Zoroastrian faith) - 250,000 adherents - Influence on the Abrahamic/Monotheistic/Western faiths - Persian Empire – controlled entire middle east (6 th  to 4 th  centuries BC) - Will become extinct in just a few generations  - Mentioned in 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, and other prophets - Cyrus the Great liberated Jews from Babylon (he and his Persian empire  defeated the Babylonians) - Modern day Iran and Iraq - King Darius  - The three wise men from “the East” were most likely Zoroastrian priests  (the “magi”) - Xerxes might have married Ester.   - Zarathustrianism (same as Zoroastrianism – Latin form rather than Greek)  – Zarathustra  - Nietzsche,  Thus Spoke Zarathustra , 1880s (intentionally provocative, mocks  Judaism and Christianity) o “God is dead” – hypothesis o “Will to Power” – argument o “Superman”
