Pericarp can be further subdivided into 3 parts namely theexocarp, the outer layer; the mesocarp, the middle layer andthe endocarp, the inner layer.b.Seed, the characteristics reproductive structure of seed plantswhich is formed from the ovule. The seed has the followingparts:1.Seed coat – the outer layer of the seed which develops fromthe integument of the ovule. It is called the testa. Thetegmen on the other hand is the inner integument of theovule.2.Endosperm – the stored food of the plant in the seed.3. Embryo – absorbing structure, food storage or foodmanufacturing organ.Fruits are classified according to their origin and pericarptexture. Based on the origin, fruits are generally divided intofour large groups:a.Simple – one that develops from a single ovary.b.Aggregate – formed from a group of ovaries produced in asingle flower.c.Multiple – composed of the ovaries of a cluster of flowersthat are borne on the same stalk.
d.Accessory fruit – consists of one or more ovaries of a clusterof flowers that are borne on the same stalkAs to pericarp texture, fruits are generally classified as fleshywhen the pericarp is fleshy and soft and dry when the pericarpis dry and hard.
