Painters to consider: Vienna became the center for a strange form of modernism known as expressionism - it’s a strange modernism in which things are not holding together o something is wrong o not interested in capturing reality at all - around 1900 Vienna was this cool interesting city with many cultures coming together - this is a doomed culture, we know that but then they didn’t, this adds to the strange and evocative nature Gustav Klimt - some people call him the godfather of expressionist - the kiss o there is a real flatness o very glittery gold like mysterious evocative and vaguely erotic portrayal - Danae o Dream like o Vaguely erotic o Not quite right - In 1897 he founded a group known as the secession who created their own style o Didn’t want to stifle talent o They create the poster o He found this too stifles still so started the Kunst Schau (an annual exhibit) Oskar Kokoschka - his self portrait o not realistic, you get a sense of looking deep into a troubled mans soul Egon Schile
