This article discusses Black Feminine identity in the novelBelovedby Toni Morrison. It first gives an introduction to Toni Morrison and her work, and mentions the fact that she won a Nobel Prize in 1993, among other achievements. This article goes on to define black feminist thought by saying, “The cores of black feminist thought are mainly made up of thoughts and concepts generated by black women that serve to elucidate a definitive viewpoint and stance for black women,” (Ghasemi 587). This article also discusses howBelovedfits into Patricia Hill Collins’ notions of “matrix of domination” and “controlling images”, but this doesn’t fit into the theme of feminism in Toni’s work. This article further discusses the notions of storytelling and identity making inBeloved, which fit into the topic of feminism because it shows how the characters in this novel repossess their bodies in a way that not all Black women have been able to in history, given the realities of rape and abuse that they have faced. This article goes on to discuss more specific details of this novel and how they are examples of feminism, such as the character Sethe’s recounting stories attesting to the cruelty that she has faced, which shows the strength it took for her to move on from the events of her past and be able to talk about them. The resulting conclusion of this article is that the depiction of a “traumatic black woman” in Beloved(Ghasemi 595) was innovative and a new exploration when it was published. According to this article, this depiction produces distinct narratives. The author of this article had a good amount of authority on the topic because it is obvious that they have read the novel and have evaluated it objectively in the context of feminism. They do not come across as biased because they provide evidence and context for the points that they make. Researching this source assisted
my inquiry because it discussed feminism in a specific novel of Toni Morrison’s. This allowed for a closer, more detailed look into the novel, as opposed to an article which focuses on multiple
