Chemistry 112 Lab: Section 001 September 17, 2014 Prelab for Assessing Intermolecular Forces by GC & Microscale Distillation 1. Describe the structural differences between the following compounds. Drawing their structures may prove useful. a. CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 has dispersion forces, longest chain (most mass), and straight chain. CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH has hydrogen bonding, and straight chain. CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 COCH 3 has dipole-dipole interactions, branched off. b. CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 has dispersion forces, longest carbon chain, and straight chain. CH3CH2CH2CHO has hydrogen bonding, and straight chain. CH 3 CH 2 COCH 3 has dipole-dipole interactions, and straight chain. c. CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 has dispersion forces, and is a straight chain. (CH 3 ) 2 CHCH 2 CH 3 has dispersion forces and is branched C(CH 3 ) 4 has dispersion forces and is branched the most. 2. Briefly describe the theory of gas chromatography and the function of a basic gas chromatogram.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
