Synthesis of Soap Report Form Chem 112L Section 001 September 30, 2014 A. Research Questions: 1. What are the components of a soap? 2. With which salt(s) does soap form a precipitate B. Observations & Results Tables Table 1. Synthesis of Soap Observations Step in the synthesis Observation Combined reactants in beaker No apparent reaction when the ethyl alcohol was added to the coconut oil, except the coconut oil appeared to slightly absorb some of the ethyl alcohol. When the 6 M sodium hydroxide was added there was no apparent reaction, but when stirred the coconut oil broke apart as expected and the liquid became slightly cloudy from small amounts of the coconut oil being released into it. Began heating reactants The coconut oil melted and floated at the top of the solution, with the ethyl alcohol and 6 M sodium hydrate at the bottom of the solution. The ethyl alcohol and 6 M sodium hydrate could have been mixed together, or they could have been in separate layers that I didn’t notice or couldn’t see. They appeared to be homogeneous though. Completed heating reactants A somewhat stinky odor was let off when the reactants were boiling. When the solution was finished heating and taken off of the hotplate it was somewhat pasty. The solution formed a thin kind of gel paste. There was also a slight yellow color in the paste.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
