The conflictover the Wilmot Proviso was one of the major events leading to the American Civil War.Free-Soil Party-The Free soil Party was a short-lived coalition political party in the United Statesactive from 1848 to 1854, when it merged into the Republican Party. The party was largely focused onthe single issue of opposing the expansion of slavery into the western territories of the United States.popular sovereignty-Popular sovereignty is the principle that the authority of a state and itsgovernment are created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their electedrepresentatives, who are the source of all political powersecede-withdraw formally from membership of a federal union, an alliance, or a political or religiousorganization.Compromise of 1850-The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five separate bills passed by theUnited States Congress in September 1850 that defused a political confrontation between slave andfree states on the status of territories acquired in the Mexican American WarFugitive Slave Act-was part of the Compromise of 1850. Theactrequired thatslavesbe returned totheir owners, even if they were in a free state. Theactalso made the federal government responsiblefor finding, returning, and trying escapedslaves.
