Chapter 1 11/02/2008 00:33:00 Reproduction is the sole good for which human beings are designed, everything else  is a means to that end No survival of the fittest—reproduction of the fittest Our culture is the outgrowth of our nature, that is why there are not vastly different  cultures around the world Weismann  – first to say that reproduction is passing down genes (not even all of  them), not the bodies being passed down Richard Dawkins – gene centered view Starts revolution to think of genes instead of bodies We are, in a way, a robot for the genes to get passed on to the next generations The goal of every organism is to get their genes into the next generation Humans are not so different, We could choose to not have sex but we don’t Marriage is a form of exploitation and cooperation There is no true progress in evolution because its competitors were adapting also.  They may have an advantage for 1 or 2 generations but soon the adaptations occur Ex. Football defense can be good for 1 year but other offenses will adapt There is 1 main exception When you’re responding to an a biotic environment (weather, etc.) there can be  progress Ex. Bears fur gets denser to respond to cold weather, the weather won’t get colder in  response

There can be a biotic progress but none with living animals This “Red Queen” competition occurs within Hosts Predators or prey Males and females Males and other males (or females) The consequences of Sex 1. Every individual in a population is unique because of “genetic shuffling.” 2. Sex not only makes us unique, it also makes sure that no individual or society will  stray too far from the “average human.” Most differences between two humans have nothing to do with race. The differences (hair, skin color) are so small and individual differences  between each individual is much different 3. Two human natures – male and female – genders Every other individual you meet is a prospective mate (opposite sex) or  competitor (same sex) Men and women are both superficial just in different ways o Men don’t care about wealth or being smart, but more about looks o Women do care about mates having money and being smarter

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
