Slide 3 What you should know . . . • …the different structures of the brain and the functions they are responsible for. • …what evidence suggests that different brain regions are specialized for different functions • …what plasticity means and what sort of experiences can lead to changes in the brain Slide 4 1758-1828 • Believed the brain was separated into specific functions – E.g., language – Color perception – “Hope” – Self-esteem • The more a person exercised such functions, the more that part of the brain grew • Thus, one could tell a person’s character by analyzing the bumps on their head Slide 5 Phrenology Map Slide 6 Karl Lashley • Eminent Harvard psychologist 1890-1958 • Showed that if rats learned a task and then received localized brain lesions, they could still do the task • Therefore, brain functions are not localized and are instead distributed evenly throughout the brain
