Anthro lec 3 Culture What is culture? Explicit culture Tacit culture – behaviors you are unaware of – e.g. Americans have 4 different speaking distance, intimate, personal, social public Some features of culture * Shared, culture is the shared values ideas, norms, and perceptions of a society that both informs behavior and is manifested in behavior * Learned through enculturation or socialization , culture is the nurture part of nature vs nurture, first agent of enculturation is through parents * Based on symbols , symbols are signs that represent reality or imaginary matter Integrated. *Symbols are arbitrary* - meaning we assigned signs to meaning, not universal * Dynamic or adaptive , ability to change, maladaptive adaptations, cultures that don’t fully help culture, e.g. fast food, maladaptive because it may help, but in the end it hurts us more Culture and change: some agents of change Diffusion spread of cultural features to another examples, migration, imperialism, Technological innovations
