Anthro lec 6 Guest lecture Theoretical themes Sheng - Cross between English and Swahili, use of Swahili outside of standardized Swahili They Twist words such as enjoy means make fun of e.g. stop enjoying me Sheng is considered a language of urban youth Language community - defines the group Language as evidence of cultural change- syncretism, hybridization, creolisation, mixing Swahili or Kiswahili Swahili (Arabic word) = coast or coastal Kiswahili – language of trade Roughly 1/2 words are arabic Islamic people allowed 4 wives they would travel around and have a wife on each port as they traveled around in their boat, and stay with them for a couple months a year Portugese influence in Swahili English influences Sheng as a creole Mixture of two internationally spoken creole languages, Swahili and English Evidence of various agents of change 4 agents of change diffusion – result of population mixing and urbanization govt polcies , Swahili = national English = official technology – distributed through media
