Cho 1 Sally Cho Hidalgo Scandinavian R5B 21 July 2014 Reading Response to Dr. Glas by Hijalmar Soderberg in 1905 In Doctor Glas, by Hjalmar Soderberg, the awareness of such an influential but unreliable narrator—Doctor Glas—provokes the readers to examine his creative writing style in his journal entries that reveal him to be a sensitive, reserved, and somewhat damaged character. Even though the narrator portrays himself as a lonely character who withdraws from human interactions, in fact, his own perception of love prevents himself from ever finding a special someone to spend his whole life with him. To appear so well put together as a doctor but in fact be so lost in his emotions, exposes the idea of how his perception of love and life is so out of reach that others cannot live up to his expectations. His different opinions about what is right compared to his society demonstrates a man who struggles to live a normal life.
