Joshua GuillenEnglish 1EssayCollege education has been the standard across the U.S. Without college education, it isknown that some employers might not even consider someone who is applying for a job. However, college education also has its downfalls. College as we all know is not the mostinexpensive expense a student can experience as a student can be stuck paying loans for halftheir life. College is also a place where students are the most stressed and can have a feeling ofbeing overwhelmed. Overall, I believe that college should not be mandatory as students have theright to choose how far they want to go in their education. There is no denying that college has a great amount of benefits that makes it a veryappealing subject to a family. Through statistics found from the Brookings Institution, aprofessional think tank that studies some of the most important topics in American history, thereis a statistical advantage on students that go to college compared to students with just a highschool degree. There is a direct causation between college and money earned in a career. Forexample, one extra year in college causes an average income increase by $3000. When wecompare this to a 4 year college experience, that is an extra $12,000 initial difference that collegecan offer. In addition, a bachelor’s degree in college can offer up to a $15,000 initial increasesalary. These statistics add up, and make a very compelling argument as a whole to why collegeis needed in American society. Even though the costs of college can oftentimes be veryexpensive, a college degree does more than just make up the loans and money invested. Eventhough a family may have to spend up to $100,000 to afford a college education for their child, it
can make a huge difference in the future. The total average salary for a student coming off abachelor degree after their working career is around $570,000, which makes up much more thanthe amount that was put in for college. When we think about this success in a bigger picture, ifall students were to go to college, our society would be in a much different picture. The economywould be in a much better position, homelessness would not be as much as an issue, and thenation will be on a great lead to succeed in future generations.
