The General Line Having seen some of Eisenstein’s previous films, I was somewhat knowledgeable about his work going into the viewing of The General Line. After all, I recall seeing the famous “Odessa Steps” sequence from Battleship Potemkin in three classes thusfar into my career at USC. Two of those classes even followed it up with a clip from Kevin Costner in The Untouchables . Eisenstein’s style; cutting rapidly and focusing on the pathos of the audience, leading us to wonder the fate of a baby stroller rolling down the steps. The General Line , while similar to what I’ve seen of Eisenstein’s work, manipulates formalism with it’s rapid cutting and almost complete avoidance of realism.
